More than 10 species of fruit and tea originally grown in Taiwan were imported to Guangdong's Jiangmen yesterday (May 18) and are on display at the 7th Guangdong (Taiwan) Business Fair for Economic Development, Trade and Technology, which opened today (May 19) in Jiangmen.
Over 300 boxes of fruits and tea arrived in Jiangmen yesterday, and are the first fruit imported from Taiwan since the mainland visit by Lien Chan, the chairmen of Taiwan's KMT party and James Cy Soong, Chairman of Taiwan's People First Party (PFP).
In wake of the visits of the two party leaders, the Chinese mainland has decided to increase market access for Taiwanese fruit, increasing the number of fruit species allowed from 12 to 18. In addition, at least 10 species of Taiwan fruit will enjoy a zero tariff policy. Weng Mingquan, a Taiwanese businessman who received the fruit at the customs office said:
[Record] The significance of the 300 boxes of Taiwan fruits is not in business. It reflects the government's kind intention. I believe it will bring over a practical and win-win result for cross-strait economy and trade.
