SHENZHEN'S emergency medical fund, which was launched earlier this month, received a HK$200,000 (US$25,641) individual donation Sunday morning, a report in the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily said.
The money was donated by an 85-year-old Chinese-American, named Liu Hengxiu who underwent medical surgery just three weeks ago.
The donation is the largest sum of money the emergency medical fund has ever received from an individual.
Liu was concerned with the emergency medical fund, which newspaper reports said was short of money since it was established.
The fund was set up by the Shenzhen Red Cross to help those who can't afford medical treatment.
Liu said he had been suffering from an illness and realized how lucky he was to be able to pay his medical expenses, said Liu.
He presented HK$200,000 to Zhao Lizhen, secretary general of the Shenzhen Red Cross, at his home in Luohu District on Sunday.
Liu underwent a urinary tract operation in a Luohu hospital in November, and is currently recovering at home.
Liu moved to Taiwan in 1920s, and later became a citizen of the United States.
