On the morning of June 3, the appearance of a number of “plump ladies” along the River Thames slowed down the steps of some Londoners. Denizens of the British capital, shrouded by fog and drizzle, are well known for their decent sense of humor. They expressed their interest in the intricate statues from oriental China by touching them and posing for photos. The iconic London Bridge was clearly visible in the background.

Unlike the other Chinese artists or Chinese paintings, sculptor Xu Hongfei works with female subjects engaged in the activities of daily life – riding bicycle, running, flying, kissing and even holding their friends and lovers. They look airy, full of confidence and are immersed in the outdoor surroundings, which offer a stark contrast to their plump bodies.

Xu’s works have toured Beijing, Sydney, Melbourne, Sicilia, Toscana and Paris. After the London stop, the series will move to Turin and Milan in June and July to echo his gratitude to Italians' passion and support when his statues were shown last year.
