Guangzhou Mayor Chen Jianhua and about 40 representatives of national media organizations and heads of provincial and municipal media outlets on June 11 visited Panyu Huoshaogang Household Garbage Landfill and the second branch of Guangzhou No. 1 Resource Thermal Power Plant. After the visit, a conference was held on national demonstration cities of household garbage sorting. At the conference, Mayor Chen declared that from July 10 onwards, Guangzhou will implement the model of "fixed-time and fixed-location" plus "non fixed-time + fixed location" for garbage sorting.

Mayor Chen said that the implementation of the model will help resolve the issue of garbage at source, as sanitary workers can put aside recyclable garbage as the first step towards recycling. Recycle garbage includes waste paper, woods, metals, plastic and glass.

A number of transshipment stations will also be built across the city for the collection and transport of sorted garbage. The garbage will be subject to secondary disintegration to reduce its weight. At the same time, harmful garbage will be thoroughly separated from kitchen garbage to reduce the amount of incineration.

According to Wei Weihan, director of Guangzhou City Management Committee, following the visit of 10,000 local residents on July 4, the second branch of the Likeng facility will host an "open house" day every Saturday for about 200 visitors. Interested local residents may sign up for such visits online.
