Shenzhen's average monthly rent of 1,140 yuan (US$186) ranks as the third-most expensive among 36 cities in China, following Beijing and Shanghai, Shenzhen Evening News reported yesterday, citing a survey by a national lifestyle website.

Ganji.com collected 130,809 questionnaires about people’s rent from 36 cities in China, from Sept. 1 to Oct. 1, and published its 2013 Rent Market Survey on Monday.

According to the survey, the average monthly rent across all 36 cities was 1,051 yuan. Rent was most expensive in Beijing, where the average was 1,479 yuan per month. Shanghai is next, at 1,328 yuan per month.

The average rents in Futian, Nanshan, Luohu and Yantian districts were more expensive than in other districts and new areas in Shenzhen, the survey said.

A three-bedroom apartment on Renmin Road South in Luohu District, for example, cost 11,610 yuan per month — the most expensive rent in the city found in the survey. Rents in Bao’an and Longgang districts were comparatively low, the survey said. A three-bedroom apartment in Shajing, Bao’an, rented for 2,350 yuan per month, which is regarded as quite cheap in the city.

Increasingly high rent costs are making more and more people choose to share a home with others, the survey found.

Shenzhen tenants are comparatively reasonable in disputes with landlords, the survey found. About 60 percent of surveyed tenants said they communicate reasonably with their landlord when disagreements arise, while 30 percent said they’d chosen to leave a rental contract because of disputes.
