World top badminton athletes will gather in Dongguan in May 2015 for 2015 Sudirman Cup, the Badminton World Mixed Team Championships.

Badminton World Federation announced the decision in a press conference on Nov 28 in Athens, Greece.

Vice Mayor of Dongguan, Yu Lijun and 5 other delegates made a presentation to the BMF Council earlier that afternoon.

With an attractive city promotion video, a persuasive presentation and a sincere attitude, Dongguan won the heart of the Council.

Hearing the good news, Yu pledged her city’s compliance with all the obligations to host the Sudirman Cup.

“We are very happy. I look forward to seeing you all in Dongguan.” sai she.

The venue will be the newly-built basketball arena in Dongguan, which can hold 160,000 people at maximum. Over 1,000 athletes, judges and journalists are expected to participate in the event. And it is estimated that more than 600,000 person/times will speculate the thrilling competitions.

Dongguan has spent a lot of efforts in the development of badminton, constructing facilities, organizing games and building professional teams. The 2015 Sudirman Cup will again improve its efforts in public sports, create a good environment for sports lovers, and promote the city to the world.

Guangdong’s performance in world class competitions reached the plateau between 2003 and 2007. In 2007, 5 Cantonese players were selected to the National Badminton Team. However, due to the shortage of funds and lack in younger talents, Guangdong’s performance has been going down afterwards. Yet, it does not sharpen Cantonese’ interest in badminton. Take Guangzhou for an example, according to a survey, badminton is the public’s favourite sport and badminton lovers has exceeded 3 million.
