In a bid to capitalize on the 72-hour visa-free transit policy and promote Guangzhou tours among international passengers, Guangzhou Municipal Tourism Bureau and local airlines and travel agencies organized a half-day free tour of the city for international passengers eligible for the policy. A welcoming ceremony was also held at the Baiyun Airport for the first group of international passengers eligible for the policy.

The first group of passengers comprised tourists from Sydney and Melbourne, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; Los Angeles, the U.S.; and Paris, France. They arrived in Guangzhou on the morning of August 6 and stayed in Guangzhou for half a day to a full day.

Guangzhou tourism officials arranged for them to visit the Chen Clan's Academy, one of the city's top tourist attractions, as well as the Canton Tower, the city's new iconic landmark. The visitors also sampled Guangzhou's "morning tea" and local fine foods. They had a good time during their brief sojourn in Guangzhou.
