Guangzhou Government has forbidden all shops in the city from selling cigarettes on May 31 in response to international No Tobacco Day.

According to the government's notice, every shop in the city selling cigarettes should remove them from the shelf on this day, or cover them up with banners or advertisements promoting no smoking.

Guangzhou released a new regulation last September to control smoking. Offenders caught smoking in prohibited areas can be fined RMB 50. A more detailed guideline is expected to become effective in this September or October, detailing how management of public areas can better monitor smoke-free areas.
