A survey indicated that due to Guangdong's rapid economic growth and the intensified interaction between Hong Kong and Guangdong, more Hong Kong people are investing, working and living in Guangdong.
The Survey of Hong Kong People Living & Working in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) Region was jointly conducted by Hong Kong Planning Department and Guangdong Provincial Department of Construction in nine cities within the PRD region.
The survey forecast the trend to rise in the coming years and its effect on the socio-economic development.
In terms of economic activity status, about 79 percent of people in the foreign-funded enterprises are employees and up to 65 percent are managers and administrators. Of the Hong Kong people living in the region, about 51 percent are employees and 16percent retirees.
With regard to occupation, 32 percent are professionals and associate professionals while 23 percent are managers and administrators. Of those engaged in foreign-funded enterprises, about 44 percent live in premises provided by employers, 35 percent in self-owned housing and 18 percent in rented accommodation.
The survey showed that about 68 percent of Hong Kong people engaged in foreign-funded enterprises in the Pearl River Delta Region are aged 31 to 50, and 87 percent are males.
On the other hand, 83 percent of Hong Kong people living in the region live in self-owned accommodation while about 14 percent arein rented housing.
The major reasons for Hong Kong people working in the region are workplace location and convenience in conducting business and investment, while reasons for living there are family-and living-related such as a better living environment and lower cost of living, the survey said. The survey began in the second quarter of last year and was completed last August.
