The fourth nuclear power plant in Guangdong, deemed to mend the province's power shortage, will be built in east of the province. Four candidate sites are Wuyu of Jieyang city, and Jiadong, Haijia, Tianwei of Lufeng city.
Experts select these four sites after considering factors as environment, cost, transportation, and water resource.
Nuclear power is one of the clean energies Guangdong government develop to balance the rising power demand and environmental protection.
Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station (GNPS) is about 45 km from Shenzhen and 50 km from Tsimshatsui, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It is based on the 900 MWe PWR designed by Framatome in France. Construction of GNPS began in 1987 and the station was completed in 1994. Unit 1 entered commercial operation in February with Unit 2 in May in the same year. Total cost for the construction was around US$ 4 billion.
The station produce about 10-12 billion kWh of electricity per year, about 70%of which is sent to Hong Kong and the rest to Guangdong.
Besides, a nuclear power project in Jieyang, involving investment of 8 billion US dollars, is expected to start construction in 2006.
