"Looking at the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the deepening collaboration between Guangdong and Macao, I'm lucky to have more new opportunities," said Chui Tinlop, the youngest partner of Lektou Law Office based in Macao, in a recent interview with GDToday.

Recently China's central authorities issued a general plan for building a Guangdong-Macao in-depth cooperation zone in Hengqin. It will provide more opportunities for young people from Macao.

Hengqin to provide more opportunities for Macao lawyers

According to Chui, the recently launched plan for building a Guangdong-Macao in-depth cooperation zone in Hengqin will attract more international corporations to Hengqin for better development. And it will catalyze more cross-border legal service demands. A bigger market with far more opportunities is awaiting lawyers from Macao.

On the one hand, Chui believes enterprises based in the Chinese mainland are coming to Macao in great numbers, enlarging the need for cross-jurisdictional and multilingual legal services.

On the other hand, lawyers in Hong Kong and Macao can step into the mainland market by operating joint law firms with mainland lawyers and passing the practicing examinations for lawyers in the GBA. "As young lawyers in Macao, we should keep pace with the times and pursue perfection in our profession. Thus, we can contribute to the development of GBA."

Born in a traditional Macao family, Chui is the son of Chui Sai Peng, Deputy to National People's Congress from Macao, and the nephew of Chui Sai-on, former Chief Executive of Macao. He is the first lawyer in his family.

After graduating from high school in the US, he studied law in Portugal, showing his passion for social affairs. He established the Luso-Macanese Students Association and the Macao Youth Summit, facilitating exchanges of students from different regions.

"The study of law requires time and experience." After college graduation, Chui pursued further education in law and economics in the US and passed New York Bar Exam. With an academic background in both common law and statutory law, and the ability to handle cross-jurisdictional matters, Chui Tinlop soon stood out in his profession. After nearly three years of internship back in Macao, he became a registered lawyer last year and was promoted to become the youngest partner of his law firm this year.

Chui Tinlop also hopes that the new generation of Macao young people will develop an excellent grasp of professional knowledge, build their strengths, seize opportunities, and thus give their values full play within the GBA.
