The tangerine peel is of much greater value than tangerine pulp to many people in Jiangmen, a city in the southeast of Greater Bay Area. It takes at least 3 years to air dry the tangerine peel and its price could go up to as much as 20 thousand yuan.

The dried tangerine peel (Chenpi) is broadly used in seasoning, tea making and traditional Chinese medicine in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. Ju Pu tea (Pu Er tea with tangerine peel), Chenpi duck and Chenpi green bean soup are all popular in the region. Many people love the unique scent of Chenpi and consider it’s good for their health.

With a history of 800 years, tangerine peel manufacturing has been a pillar industry of Jiangmen. Jiangmen’s Xinhui Chenpi has now been a well-known brand that represents good quality in GBA regions and within overseas Chinese communities.
To boost industrial development, the Jiangmen government is actively helping farmers to optimize their business model and adopt advanced technologies in different manufacturing procedure including tangerine peeling, air-drying and quality inspection.

With all these efforts, the industry has created 55,000 jobs and its output reached 10.2 billion yuan in 2020. It helped increase farmers’ income by 20 thousand yuan per person.
