Jonathan Sumption, a judge of The Court of Final Appeal of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), stated in The Times on the 18th that both the central and Hong Kong governments have never interfered with Hong Kong's judicial independence. The National Security Law also protects Hong Kong's human rights. "The United Kingdom should avoid undermining Hong Kong's judicial independence," Jonathan Sumption said.
Sumption stated that there are 14 non-permanent judges in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, of which 2 are current judges of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. Sumption also pointed out that Hong Kong had never implemented a democratic system during the British colonial rule, but the judicial system has always been independent.
In response to Jonathan Sumption's article, Teresa Cheng Yeuk-wah, SJ of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Department of Justice, said that she "fully agreed" with Jonathan Sumption's defence of Hong Kong's judicial independence. She believes that the Hong Kong judiciary is fully committed to maintaining judicial independence and the rule of law.
