Higos, the 7th typhoon of this year landed in the coastal area of Jinwan District in Zhuhai, at around 6:00 am today (August 19th), bringing winds of 35 meters per second, according to local authorities. Most parts of Guangdong, especially the Pearl River Delta, Maoming, Yangjiang and Yunfu will see torrential rain today.

Now Zhuhai has initiated a Level-I emergency response for Higos. The city has decided to suspend work, business and classes from 10 pm, August 18th.

Affected by typhoon and tides, the seawater may overflow the dikes. According to Zhuhai authorities, the city's main roads, Qinglü Road, and Gangwan Avenue were all closed from 7:00 am today. Residents are requested not to go out and cooperate with traffic control restrictions.

Earlier on, at 6:00 am, the authorities announced that Gongbei Port, the special port for the Zhuhai-Macao Cross-border Industrial Zone, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will be temporarily suspended for passenger's entry and exit. The opening time for customs clearance at the ports will be notified as soon as it is known to be safe to do so.

Guangdong has taken measures to ensure the safety of residents. According to China Daily, all the tourists in the island and coastal areas of western Guangdong must evacuate to safe areas before Higos arrives, major construction projects have also been asked to halt work on Tuesday until further notice.

As of 10 pm, August 18th, 25,636 fishing boats in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Yangjiang, Maoming, Zhanjiang, Shanwei and Huizhou have returned to shelter. By 8:50 am, August 19th, 67,148 residents have been evacuated to safety in Guangdong.

Flights and train services are suspended

Since last night, over 200 flights have been canceled at airports in the cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Zhanjiang due to Higos.

As of 11:00 am, August 19th, the China Southern Airlines has canceled 162 flights in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai; As of 8:30 am, August 19th, China Eastern Airlines has decided to suspend more than 50 flights in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Zhanjiang.

According to the railway authorities, intercity railways linking Jiangmen-Zhanjiang, Guangzhou-Zhuhai, Gongbei-Hengqin will be suspended on August 19th. Some trains of Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway, Nanning-Guangzhou Railway and Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-speed Railway are also suspended.
