On July 2nd, construction on the tunnel project near the Pearl River Estuary of the Shenzhen-Jiangmen Railway started in Nansha. The tunnel will be 13.69 kilometers in length and its construction period is 56 months.

The total length of the Shenzhen-Jiangmen Railway is 116 kilometers, with a designed speed of 250 kilometers per hour. It will go 45 kilometers underground and along a 69.2-kilometer bridge.

Also, a 20.4-kilometer rail line will be built to link Shenzhen North Railway Station with Shenzhen Airport Station, and 12.6-kilometer lines will be built in Zhongshan, Jiangmen. The whole project will cost 51.31 billion yuan and will be completed in 5.5 years.

The railway running through 5 cities encompasses the Greater Bay Area including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan and Jiangmen.

After the operation of this railway commences, it will help to build a half-hour living and economic circle in the GBA. Qianhai in Shenzhen will be accessible from Nansha in just half an hour.

Earlier, construction of the Zhanjiang section of the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang High-speed Railway started on June 30th. It is the longest high-speed rail project in Guangdong, with a total investment of 99.8 billion yuan, of which Zhanjiang section will cost 19.3 billion yuan.

The new line is about 400 kilometers long and it is scheduled to be completed in 2024. Starting from Guangzhou Railway Station, it will pass through Foshan, Zhaoqing, Yunfu, Yangjiang, and Maoming, ending at Zhanjiang North Station, with a top speed of 350 kilometers per hour.

After completion, it will shorten the travel time from downtown Guangzhou to Zhanjiang from 3 hours to 1.5 hours at most.

It will also link with Zhanjiang-Haikou high-speed railway in the future, this is regarded as an important move to serve for the cooperation of the GBA and Hainan Free Trade Zone (FTZ).
