As of May, Guangdong police have received more than 9,200 reports of naked chat blackmail, which has increased by a factor of over ten in the same period last year.

According to Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department, cases caused by naked chat have grown sharply since the beginning of 2020. As of May, Guangdong police have received more than 9,200 reports of naked chat blackmail, which has increased by a factor of over ten in the same period last year.

Naked chat extortion refers to a new form of online fraud. Criminals often entice victims (mainly males) to expose some private parts of their body and record the nude videos and pictures. Then they trick the victim into downloading a virus-containing application and stealing the contact list from his mobile phone. Finally, the criminals will use these indecent videos as a threat. If the victim refuses to transfer a large amount of money, the criminal will send nude videos or pictures to victim’s families, friends, even their girlfriend or wife though the contact list.

According to Guangdong police, the extortion is mainly concentrated in Guangdong's six cities, including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Foshan, Huizhou and Zhongshan, accounting for 82.54 percent of the total. Among them, Foshan, Dongguan and Heyuan have witnessed a rapid growth of similar crimes.

Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department therefore reminds the public to be vigilant, resist sexual seduction, and strengthen your awareness of self-prevention. Do not randomly click or download unknown links and applications. If you meet a suspicious video chat invitation or have been blackmailed, please call the police for help immediately!
