In China, driving with an international driving permit or other foreign driving license is not allowed. Overseas people that wish to obtain a driving license in China will have to go through the following application process.
Step 1: Take a physical examination and get photographed
❖ Take a physical examination in medical institutions at or above the county level;
❖ Have your photo taken by a specified ID photo studio or self-service photo booth.
Step 2: Get documents ready
The applicant should submit the application in person with the following documents:
❖ Original overseas driving license and its Chinese translation;
❖ ID
❖ ID Photos( 22×32mm, white background).

Step 3: File an application
For those who hold a foreign driving license, if currently also holding a residence certificate, shall apply at the vehicle management station that issued the residence certificate, and if not, shall go to the local vehicle management station with their valid visa or residence permit.
Step 4: Take tests
Driving licenses are divided into 16 classes according to different vehicle types in China. The test requirements for the major classes are below:

Note:
❖ Applicants for C1 or C2, if holding a driving license from countries which recognise Chinese licenses, will be exempted from the examination. (e.g. France, Belgium and United Arab Emirates)
❖ Applications made by the personnel of foreign embassies, consulates and representatives of international organizations in China shall follow the principle of diplomatic equivalence.
Once all the documents are submitted and the tests are passed, you will receive your Chinese license within 5 days.
