Born in Shantou, Guangdong, Fatchi, aka Feizhi (肥志) or Lin Yuanzhi, is famous for his cartoon works ‘When History Meows’ and ‘Fatchi Baike’.

Fatchi brought three strips to the 289 Art Park for a three-day exhibition between May 18th and 20th, illustrating the origin of the name of Guangzhou, the history of ‘the most extravagant breakfast in China’ morning tea and ‘the best-selling chicken dish’ white cut Qingping chicken.

In addition to the exhibition, Fatchi also hosted a talk at the Park on the afternoon of May 19th, to share his cuisine stories with fans.

Fatchi pointed out that Cantonese cuisine is all about subtlety and emphasises freshness as well as the original taste and flavour of the ingredients. He picked out three must-try ‘dishes’ for those who visit Guangzhou for the first time: morning tea, beef offal and white cut chicken.

After the session, Fatchi was appointed a member of the Youth Animation & Cartoon Committee by the Guangzhou Cartoonists Association.

Fatchi hopes to help spread the culture and history of Cantonese cuisine through his cartoons, and tell his readers humorous yet moving stories about the cuisine, especially the younger generation.

The exhibition and talk formed part of both the ‘Guangzhou Cartoon Season’ and Asian Cuisine Festival (ACF). The ACF, a key component of the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations, kicked off in Guangzhou on May 16th and will run until the 23rd, attracting foodies from far and wide eager to get a taste of Cantonese cuisine, Chinese food, and delicacies from other parts of Asia.
