According to Hong Kong media reports, on the morning of January 21st, a window fell from The Mira Hong Kong, a hotel on Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, hitting a 24-year-old woman from Foshan, Guangdong. The 24-year-old woman, surnamed Zuo, was shopping in Hong Kong with her boyfriend on Monday morning. She was taken to hospital in a coma and died at noon. Hong Kong police arrested a cleaning woman for allegedly causing the window to fall.

The incident happened at about 10:00 am on the morning of January 21st. A cleaning worker was cleaning a room on the 16th floor of The Mira Hong Kong hotel. When she opened the 144cm long and 30cm wide glass window, the pane suddenly fell out and hit the young woman walking on Nathan Road. After the event, glass shards were scattered over an area of 6 meters.

According to the report, after the incident, a number of police officers combed the site to search for evidence, including examining fingerprints on the window frames, broken glass, and the victim's coat.

The senior inspector from Yau Tsim Mong district crime unit, Mrs. Chan Ka-ying, said that guests were not allowed to open the windows of the hotel on their own, only hotel staff had specific keys to do so.

Chen also said the glass window fell when the cleaning woman tried to push it (in order to open the window), that "the window fell as soon as the window was opened." She said there was no tampering or prior damage to the window unit and further tests were needed.

When asked whether anyone had smoked in the room, Chen indicated that further investigation still needs to be conducted. She also said the man who was traveling with the deceased woman suffered minor injuries and was discharged after being hospitalized.

The Mira Hong Kong Hotel issued a statement saying that they apologise profusely for the incident and extends their sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. The hotel is actively cooperating with the police investigation and will do its best to provide assistance if necessary.
