Special Reports: Beijing Olympic Games
China's top legislator Wu Bangguo called the Olympic Movement "a common wealth of mankind"聽in Beijing聽on Monday (Apr 7), while addressing the opening of the 16th general assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC).
The Olympic Movement has developed constantly and made unique and significant contributions to promoting world peace and development over the past 100 years, under the leadership of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the joint efforts by international sports organizations like ANOC and people of all countries," said Wu, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.
He highlighted the importance of the convening of the first ANOC biennial meeting in China, saying it added luster to Beijing, the host city of the 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympics. It was once again an indication of the care and support to the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics by the international sports circle and friends from different countries.
It is the common aspiration of Chinese people and those of different countries to develop the Olympic Movement and promote the harmonious development of society, he said.
Wu said the Chinese Government actively supported and participated in international Olympic affairs, noting China had sent delegations to attend six Summer Olympic Games and eight Winter Olympic Games.
The Chinese Government and people would continue to step up cooperation with the IOC, the ANOC and the international sports circle, work hard on the preparatory work, and ensure the success of the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics, he said.
Wu said China warmly welcomes athletes, coaches and people of all circles from different countries and regions to attend, observe and cover the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics.
"The Association of National Olympic Committees has supported very resolutely and firmly the organization of the Beijing Olympic Games," ANOC President Mario Vazquez Rana said in his opening remarks.
"It will make all efforts so that the Games may achieve the greatest success for the benefit of the young athletes, and as a contribution towards friendship, solidarity and peace among the youth and all people from around the world."
Other speakers included Jacques Rogge, IOC president, Liu Qi, CPC Central Committee Political Bureau member, Beijing Party chief and Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the 29th Olympiad (BOCOG) president, and Liu Peng, General Administration of Sport director, Chinese Olympic Committee president and BOCOG executive chairman.
Also present were Liu Yandong, state councilor and CPC Central Committee Political Bureau member and BOCOG vice chairperson, ChenZhili, vice chairperson of the NPC Standing Committee and BOCOG vice chairperson, and Deng Pufang, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China Disabled Persons Federation president and BOCOG executive chairman.
ANOC is currently made up of 205 national Olympic committees (NOCs) and is split among five continental associations. They meet at least once every two years to exchange information and experiences to consolidate their role within the Olympic Movement.
The ANOC assembly will be followed by an executive board meeting of the IOC in Beijing from April 10-11. It will include reports on the IOC's latest activities and receive updates on preparations for the forthcoming Olympic Games in Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 and London 2012.
