China revises its GDP growth rate in 1979-2004 period

China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Monday the country's revised gross domestic products (GDP) growth rate in the 1979-2004 period, in accordance with the first national economic survey.

The average GDP growth rate for the 1979-2004 period was revised to 9.6 percent, 0.2 percentage point higher than the original figure. The GDP growth rate of 2004 has been altered from previous 9.5 percent to 10.1 percent, the NBS said.

China announced the result of first national economic survey last December, saying that the aggregate current price of GDP in 2004 totaled 15.9878 trillion yuan (1.9 trillion U.S. dollars), 2.3 trillion yuan, or 16.8 percent, more than the original figure.

The change of GDP statistics is the result of accumulation in previous years, said the NBS.

The revised GDP growth rates from 1993 to 2004 are respectively 14.0 percent, 13.1 percent, 10.9 percent, 10.0 percent, 9.3 percent, 7.8 percent, 7.6 percent, 8.4 percent, 8.3 percent, 9.1 percent, 10.0 percent and 10.1 percent.

The growth rate prior to the revision are respectively 13.5 percent, 12.6 percent, 10.5 percent, 9.6 percent, 8.8 percent, 7.8 percent., 7.1 percent, 8.0 percent, 7.5 percent, 8.3 percent, 9.5 percent and 9.5 percent.

When China's NBS revised the GDP data of 2004 last December, 93 percent of the increased 2.3 trillion yuan came from the tertiary industry. China had revised its GDP data from 1978 to 1992 following the first national survey on the tertiary industry in 1992. Therefore, the period for data revision this time is set between 1993 and 2003, said NBS. (1 US dollar= 8.06 yuan)
