'There's been a lot of hype lately about Norway's wealth from its oil resources, but new figures show Norwegians are not the wealthiest in the region, Norwegian Broadcasting reported on Monday.

According to the country's statistical agency SSB, Norwegians trail residents of Luxemboug, when Gross National Product (GNP) is measured per resident.

The SSB used figures from a survey of European purchasing power conducted by Eurostat.

The numbers for 2004 indicate that Norway has Europe's second-highest GNP per resident. Next in line came Ireland, Switzerland and Austria.

Norway's GNP per resident was 53 percent higher than the average of the 25 European countries surveyed, and 30 percent higher than Sweden's and Finland's.

The least wealthy countries of the original European Union were Portugal and Greece. New members such as Poland and the three Baltic countries had GNP per resident that was just a third of Norway's level.
