Guangdong announced Friday that the province will implement a three-tiered pricing system for residential electricity use starting July 1, following the practice of most other provinces and regions in China.
The new system will increase prices for families and homes that use more electricity than others. According to the plan, electricity prices will be charged based on two standards, one for the summer period from May to October and another for the rest.
During the summer period, electricity prices for users in the first, low-use bracket will remain the same as before. However, users in the middle bracket will pay an additional 0.05 yuan per kwh, while users in the last, highest-usage bracket will pay an extra 0.30 yuan per kwh. The threshold for the first bracket will be raised to 260 kwh during summer and 200 kwh during other seasons after many people complained that the initially proposed threshold was too low.(Mu Zi)
