Amcham donates 2,422,220 RMB cash and goods for poverty-reduction and orphans’ life-saving

The American Chamber of Commerce in South China (AmCham South China) held a press conference today announcing that the months long AmCham South China 2011 Charity Theme Events has collected cash RMB1,792,000 and in-kind donations worth of RMB 630,220 with the in-detail list.

AmCham South China 2011 Charity Theme Events are organized by Guangzhou People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the American Chamber of Commerce in South China and Guangzhou Women and Children’s Medical Center, with all the funds processed by Guangzhou Youth Development Foundation. Half of the raised funds and will be applied to poverty reduction efforts in Meitang Village and neighboring villages, Wuhua County, Meizhou City, and half to funding life-saving operations for orphans abandoned by their parents.

Started in August, the campaign received RMB 1 Million cash from Mead Johnson Nutrition (China) and RMB 100,000 cash from Color China Restaurant of Canton Tower at the very beginning. On September 21st, AmCham South China led its members to Guangzhou Women and Children’s Medical Center in Zhujiang New Town to visit the severely ill orphans and learn how the donations can help them. On October 28th and 29th, Harley Seyedin, President of AmCham South China, and Liu Baochun, Director of Guangzhou Foreign Affair Office, led a charity delegation of over 100 members to Meitang Village, bringing truck loads of donations worth of RMB 630,220 from AmCham member companies and offering free medical service for the villagers. The delegation also inspected several construction projects, in the hope of making investments and achieving long-term development for the village by introducing advanced technology and management.

“The Charity Theme Events of this year has enormously aroused the public awareness of philanthropy and assured the efficiency and transparency of the entire charity process from donation to delivery,” said AmCham President Harley, “I have benefited a lot from it too. Charity is not about money, it is about the heart. We have more to do.”

In addiction, as the fifth and the final charity event of the series, 2011 Charity Winter Ball will be held on November 19th at Guangzhou Jinhan Exhibition Center, to celebrate the great success of the Charity Events. Leaders of Guangzhou Municipal Government will present awards for the main donors. Consul Generals of foreign consulates in Guangzhou, members of AmCham South China and other political and business celebrities will attend this grand event, while Hong Kong entertainment veteran Philip Chan and young heartthrob screen actor Dylan Sterling (recently featured in “Bruce Lee, My Brother” and “Crazy GPS”) will show up as the MC.
