A grand ceremony was held yesterday (Aug 25) to launch construction work on 60 key projects to celebrate today's 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.

Among them are six road projects, which are aimed at improving traffic between Longgang, Bao'an, Futian and Luohu districts, the city transport commission said yesterday.

The 3.25-km extension of Caitian Road will connect Caitian Flyover in Futian and Xinqu Boulevard in Longhua in Bao'an. The two-way six-lane road is expected to be finished within two years.

The Meiguan Expressway will be expanded to a two-way eight-lane road and Shenhua Expressway, linking Fulong Road and Longguan Expressway, is designed to serve residents in Longgang and Luohu after it is completed in two years.

Construction also began yesterday on three hospital projects, part of an effort to build Shenzhen into a regional medical center in South China.

The projects are the new inpatients' department building of Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital, a new building at the Shenzhen No. 2 People's Hospital and Baohe Hosptial in Longgang District. The inpatients' building at Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital, covering 14,000 square meters, will have 630 beds when it opens in 2014. The new building at the No. 2 hospital, which will also open in 2014, will have 626 beds. Baohe Hospital, designed for 800 beds, will open in 2013.

This will mean an additional 12,000 beds when the projects are completed.

The city also plans to build three reservoirs and diversion projects around Gongming to ensure the city's water supply. Also yesterday, construction work started on three 50,000-ton berths at Yantian port.

Meanwhile, Shenzhen Party chief Wang Rong and Mayor Xu Qin visited 93-year-old Yuan Geng, founder of Shekou Industrial Zone who is well-known as a "reform pioneer," and Ma Fuyuan, former president of Shenzhen SEG Group, one of the city's biggest and oldest electronics groups. The leaders extended heartful thanks to the two men who had made remarkable achievements in the city's development.

A series of celebrations will be staged across the city to mark the city's anniversary today.
