Guangzhou will formulate a comprehensive plan for the treatment of domestic garbage, strengthen the eco-friendliness of the city's garbage incineration power plants, and introduce a mechanism under which the environmental protection agency will supervise the operations of the plants on the spot. These moves were announced on March 7 at the Guangzhou City Administration Work Conference.

Guangzhou City Administration Committee Director Li Tinggui stated that garbage incineration power plants will be designed and built in accordance with the standards for "open-style community centers", and that their accessory facilities will be artistically landscaped, so that the plants will be garden-style demonstration bases for eco-friendliness education. On the strength of such bases, a comprehensive range of domestic garbage treatment facilities will be planned and built to rid the cities of garbage.

Director Li also revealed that Guangzhou will draw upon the experience of the Shanghai World Expo to carry out a range of environmental enhancement actions, including cleaning of hallways, deodorization of gutters, orderly parking of bicycles, repair of lawns at residential estates, door-to-door collection of bulk household garbage, repair of pavements at residential estates, cleaning of public toilets at the old city core and urban villages, removal of public clotheslines at the old city core, improvement of utility lines at the old city core, repair of damaged signage, and standardization of signage wording.
