On January 14 at the eighth plenary session of the ninth CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee, Zhu Xiaodan, secretary of the Committee, announced that Guangzhou will strive to build a low-carbon city.

Secretary Zhu stated that Guangzhou will give high priority to the research and development of low-carbon technologies and the accumulation of such technologies, endeavor to grow the low-carbon economy, promote low-carbon lifestyles and eco-friendly consumption of materials, and step up the efforts to build an industrial system and consumption model that will ensure low carbon emissions.

Guangzhou plans to build a "low-carbon" city at the Nansha Development Zone. The city's Construction Committee, in conjunction with other government agencies, will set out to renovate the city's more than 100,000 street lamps to improve their energy efficiency. Moreover, Guangzhou will also bid for the title as a national pilot city for energy efficiency and new-energy automobiles and will vigorously promote automobiles powered by new forms of energy.
