In 2013, Guangdong sold 3.41 billion pairs of shoes to foreign countries, down 5.9 percent year on year. However, the total value went up 5.2 percent to 13.92 billion USD.

The Renminbi appreciation, labor cost rise and competition from southeast Asia are the main reasons for the drop of export volume, said Peng Yisheng, Vice General Manager of Apache Footware Ltd., a OEM working with Adidas.

The data shows that thanks to China-ASEAN FTZ, Guangdong sold 770 million pairs of shoes to ASEAN, rocketing 39.4 percent, while the export value climbed 69.8 percent to 1.49 billion USD. The volume beat those of the province’s export to USA and Latin America and making ASEAN the biggest buyer of Guangdong shoes.

Besides shoes, Guangdong’s other labor intensive products are also popular among ASEAN countries, such as yarn, textile and garments and accessories, booking increases from 10.7 percent to 36.4 percent.

However, Guangdong’s No.1 seller in ASEAN market is electronic and machinery products, accounting for 59.1 percent of Guangdong’s export to ASEAN.
