The first Guangdong locally made subway train roll off the assembly line in Guangzhou on the morning of July 6, 2011

The first Guangdong locally made subway train roll off the assembly line in Guangzhou on the morning of July 6, which is a big step forward in Guangdong’s subway construction, and a spur of the province’s urban mass transit (UMT) equipment manufacturing industry.

The subway train is produced by the China (Guangzhou) South Locomotive & Rolling Urban Railway Vehicles base (hereinafter referred to as “Guangzhou CSR Base”), and another CSR base in Jiangmen. The collaboration will complete their first intercity rail train production by the end of this year.

It is expected that, by the time the province’s subway and intercity railway network is in shape, a UMT equipment manufacturing chain will be enhanced in Guangdong and then the province’s high-end manufacturing will enter a new level.

“In the new five year plan, Guangzhou will build over 3000 kilometers railways, the demand in vehicle assembling and maintenance will grow rapidly.” said an official from Guangzhou Metro Corporation, “It is expected that more than 15,000 railway vehicles will be needed in Pearl River Delta including Dongguan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong in the next 30 years.”

The market prospect reflects Guangdong’s big opportunities in upgrading its equipment manufacturing industry.

The Guangzhou CSR Base, the largest rail equipment base in the Pearl River Delta at present, is one of the five key advanced manufacturing bases in the overall planning of the development of a modern industrial system in Guangdong during the "Twelfth five-year Plan",

After the base phase I is put into operation, several types of trains which are currently used in Guangzhou Metro, can be assembled and maintained here, and the annual production capacity can reach 350 vehicles. The localization of production and maintenance reduce the costs of the provincial urban railway construction and operation.

A complete industrial chain consists of vehicle manufacturing, key assembly unit and basic ingredient processing is expected to form around Guangzhou. At the same time over 20 kinds of industries in neighboring parts of Guangdong province and south China including steel, alloy, machine building, mechanical and electrical industry and electronic information will be developed.
