With the successive launching of national platforms like the trauma center of the China Trauma Treatment Alliance and the tumor early screening program, Huazhou, a county-level city in Maoming, has progressed in its goal of building a national community of health.

The Guangzhou-based Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University has been assisting the development of Huazhou People's Hospital since November 2018.

To date, Huazhou People's Hospital has newly built six disciplines, as well as implemented more than 100 new technologies and projects. The number of critical cases increased from 5,711 in 2017 to 35,012 in 2019, an over six-fold increase, while that of grade III and IV surgeries rose from 2,331 in 2017 to 8,906 in 2019, a four-fold increase.

China implements a surgical grading system that divides surgeries into four grades in accordance with their technical difficulty, complexity, and risks. Grade IV surgeries refer to those with great technical difficulties, complicated surgical procedures, and high risks.

The hospital's DRGs (Diagnosis Related Groups) ranking rose from 19th to ninth place in the province, while its hospitalization rate increased from 78.3 percent in 2016 to 87.4 percent in the first quarter of 2020.

Huazhou has also been promoting five major featured medical brand projects in recent years, including the hepatitis B prevention and treatment project of Luo Kangxian, who was born in 1931 and has been working on the chronic disease for more than 70 years.

In June, Luo's expert team carried out hepatitis B screening for about 2,000 people in Xiebai village, a poverty-stricken village in the city. Such screenings will be gradually expanded in Huazhou and is expected to eliminate hepatitis B in the city by 2030.

A general hospital that will cover an area of more than 300 mu (20 hectares) is also being planned to be built in Huazhou, along with the construction of the national community of health, to solve the difficulty of seeing a doctor for the 1.8 million Huazhou residents.
