The Comprehensive Scientific Research Building of Sun Yat-sen University's Tianqin Space-based Gravitational Wave Research project recently passed inspection, according to the builder, Zhuhai Jian'an Group.

Costing 158 million yuan ($22 million), the 6-story research building occupies 29,242 sq m (7 acres) on the southwest of Zhuhai Campus of Sun Yat-sen University in Tangjiawan. Phase I has floorage of 38,708 sq m (10 acres), of which 9,063 sq m (2 acres) are underground and has won the 2020 Quality Structure Award of Guangdong Construction Projects.

The facility will be used for ground research on the Tianqin (harp in the sky) project. The overall purpose of the project is to place three identical satellites that form an equilateral triangle with a side length of 170,000 km (105,633 miles) in earth orbit 100,000 km (62,137 miles) high and be a gravitational wave detection observatory ready for cutting-edge fundamental space science research by 2035. The project was proposed in March 2014 by Luo Jun, president of Sun Yat-sen University and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The Tianqin's laser rangefinder station on top of Fenghuang Mt behind the Zhuhai Campus was opened in the first half of 2019. It has made China the third country to measure earth-moon distance with echo signals sent from all five retroreflectors currently on the lunar surface. The measurement taken is the most precise in the country and reaches the internationally advanced level, said Luo in an interview during China's Two Sessions in May.

Construction of a 10,000-sq-m (2.5-acre) ultra-quiet cave laboratory, another part of the project at the foot of Fenghuang Mt, is to be completed in early 2021.
