As heavy rain hammered Dongguan circa 1pm on 1st June, many citizens passing through Shatian Town saw the unusual spectacle of a water tornado above the Shizi Channel estuary.

Most water tornadoes (waterspouts) occur above seas or lakes. Their formation occurs when rising warm, humid air, and the decline of cold air meet over adequate terrain. The tornado can suck water from the water surface, forming a water pillar, which sometimes even connects with clouds. It resembles a dragon absorbing water, so the phenomenon is often called the "dragon absorbing water" in Chinese.

Though the phenomenon of water tornadoes usually lasts just a few minutes to half an hour, it will glide across the sea surface with strong destructive power. When sighted, people should resist their curiosity and instead take all measures to avoid it as its power should not be underestimated!

According to forecasts by the city's meteorological bureau, there will be heavy rain in Dongguan in the next 10 days. Moderate thunderstorms are expected with partial heavy rains in the city to persist from 2nd to 4th June. Due to the southwest monsoon, there will be significant rainfall from 5th to 7th June. From 8th to 10th June, the weather will be cloudy with occasional showers or thunderstorms.

The city’s Emergency Management Bureau and Meteorological Bureau issued a reminder that the city has entered the "Dragon Boat Water" season, during which time the south-westerly warm and humid airflow is prone to continuous and extreme precipitation. In addition to waterlogging roads and underground garages, special consideration should be made in respect of the following: First, pay attention to prevent geological disasters such as landslides. Second, prevent the impact of strong convective weather on marine operations and water traffic. Third, prevent disasters such as the collapse of old houses, factory sheds, temporary buildings, billboards, and trees caused by lightning strikes and strong winds.
