Three qualified patients that have recovered from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Zhanjiang donated 600ml of their plasma at Zhanjiang Blood Center to help treat current patients battling the disease. This is the first time that Zhanjiang has collected plasma from recovered patients.

Convalescent plasma has been authorized by the National Health Commission as an option for treatment of patients with critical cases of COVID-19.

After receiving the notice on collecting blood samples, the blood center immediately set up a working group and made a detailed plan covering the collection process, operator arrangement, protective measures, and disinfection.

After the plasma is collected, four experienced laboratory staff members will perform the specimen test, and another skilled composition staff will make the components.

The arrangement and implementation of measures to encourage patients who have recovered from COVID-19 to donate their plasma to help other patients, as well as the condition screening of patients were carried out by the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University.

A batch of high-quality medical protective clothing, goggles, N95 medical masks, and other protective materials were donated to the blood center to ensure the safety of workers and blood donors, as well as the plasma quality.
