A medical product developed with world-leading next-generation industrial biotechnology will soon be put into industrialized production in Hengqin New Area.

Zhuhai MedPHA Biotech says their polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are distinctive in biocompatibility and maintain mechanical properties in the process of degrading. PHA degradation products can also promote the rapid growth of cells.

A large volume of international and domestic research shows that the material has much potential in the fields of tissue repair and absorbable medical equipment. Up to now, there have been no such products on the market.

MedPHA Biotech succeeded in producing the high-purity medical-use PHAs at Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Science & Technology Industrial Park of Cooperation Between Guangdong & Macao. Not only will this fill the gap in the global supply of the material, but it will also add to domestic independence in medical equipment raw materials.

This particular biotechnology was invented by Chen Guoqiang, distinguished professor of the Cheung Kong Scholar Program at the School of Life Sciences of Tsinghua University. Zhuhai MedPHA Biotech is a joint venture founded by Livzon Pharmaceutical Group and Hengqin Baomei Enterprise Management Center to promote the industrial transformation of the technology.

Currently, the material is receiving attention from medical equipment companies, universities and colleges, and research institutes, and has been used in researches in orthopedics, dentistry, and surgery. Products include hernia patches, sutures, vascular clamps, cartilages, nerve guidance conduits, artificial esophaguses, and intravascular stents.
