Four world-famous, award-winning musicals will be staged at Nanshan Cultural and Sports Center from September to early next year.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s popular show “Cats” will be staged for 12 nights, young fans will sing and dance with the rock version of French musical “Le Rouge et Le Noir: L’Opera Rock,” music lovers will hear beloved song “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” from Webber’s musical “Evita,” and finally “Chicago,” the dazzling Broadway show, will shine in town in early 2020.

‘Cats’

“Cats” is a sung-through musical composed by Webber. The musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make the “Jellicle choice,” deciding which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.

Directed by Trevor Nunn and choreographed by Gillian Lynne, “Cats” first opened to favorable reviews in West End in 1981 and on Broadway in 1982. It won numerous awards, including Best Musical at both the Laurence Olivier Awards and the Tony Awards. Its most well-known song “Memory” has been recorded hundreds of times.

‘Le Rouge et Le Noir: L’Opera Rock’

Based on the French classic novel “The Red and the Black” by Stendhal, father of modern fiction, “Le Rouge et Le Noir: L’Opera Rock” is a rock musical adapted by Francois Chouquet. It’s the story of a low-born but ambitious young man in the Napoleonic era, who seeks to rise beyond his station through a mixture of determination, deception, hard work and hypocrisy, told through modern music and multimedia effects. The show is in French with Chinese subtitles.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Nov. 14-17 (Nov. 16-17 also at 2:30 p.m.)

‘Evita’

With music by Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, “Evita” concentrates on the life of Argentine political leader Eva Perón, the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón, also called Evita. The story follows Evita’s early life, rise to power, charity work and eventual death.

The British musical staged at West End in 1978 and Broadway in 1979 won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical and the Tony Award for Best Musical. This has been followed by a string of worldwide tours and albums.

‘Chicago’

“Chicago” is a U.S. musical with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. Set in jazz-age Chicago, the musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about actual criminals and crimes she reported on. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the “celebrity criminal.”

The original Broadway production opened in 1975. Bob Fosse choreographed the original production, and his style is strongly identified with the show. “Chicago” has been staged in numerous productions around the world and has toured extensively. The 2002 film version of the musical won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
