The intercity railway which connects Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Shenzhen in South China's Guangdong province is set to open for traffic by the end of September, according to information from the Shenzhen municipal transport bureau.

Construction of the railway began in December 2008. It spans the length of 76 kilometers and traces roughly along the east bank of the Pearl River.

The railway line starts from Guangzhou Xintang Railway Station and ends at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, with a total of 15 stations along the route, of which one is in Guangzhou and four are in Shenzhen.

Trains are designed to run at 140 to 160 km per hour on the railway line. After its completion, the trains will be operated like buses at 2.5-minute intervals. It will only take one hour to finish the complete route.

The Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen Intercity Railway, as the first intercity railway connecting Guangzhou and Shenzhen, is one of the main rail lines in the Pearl River Delta region.

It not only links the subway lines among the three cities, but also connects the national high-speed railways, including the Beijing-Kowloon Railway and the Meizhou-Shantou High-speed Railway, integrating the transportation of subways, railways, and aviation in the Pearl River Delta region into one system.
