Government officials, company representatives, non-profit organizations and artists from China and South Korea shared their stories of friendship and exchanges at an event in Seoul Monday.

The stories of friendly communication between South China’s Guangdong province and South Korea epitomize the two countries’ time-honored friendship, said Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Qiu Guohong.

“Significant development has been seen from the communication and cooperation between Guangdong and South Korea in politics, economy and trade, as well as cultural exchanges,” Qiu said.

Organized by the Guangzhou Municipal Government Information Office, the sharing event of China-South Korea friendly exchange aimed to deepen the cooperation and communication between the two countries, while promoting mutual understanding among the people.

“The people-to-people bond is demonstrated by communications among different people,” said Song Soo-keun, the chairman of the China-South Korea Culture Promotion Society.

Song, former vice-minister of ROK’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said he believes the society will continue making contributions to strengthen the cultural and art communication between the two countries.

Guangzhou, capital of South China’s Guangdong province, is China’s third-largest city after Beijing and Shanghai. Guangdong’s GDP this year is estimated to exceed 10 trillion yuan (US$1.44 trillion).

A spokesperson from the publicity department of Guangdong province said the region is promoting a new round of reform and opening-up, including the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, a national strategy devised and deployed by President Xi Jinping to build a world-class city cluster around China’s Pearl River Delta area.

The city aims to develop this region into a dynamic and competitive international first-class bay area, and this will provide huge opportunities for Guangdong and South Korea to further cooperate, said the spokesperson.

Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-seop said his city and Guangzhou not only share names similar in pronunciation but also share a lot in common in industrial development, such as manufacturing and technology. Guangzhou and Gwangju established sister city relations in 1996.

A variety of traditional and modern Chinese and South Korean performances were also presented, including Pansori, a percussion instrument performance in South Korea; Cantonese Opera, one of the major categories in Chinese opera; Nanta, a South Korean non-verbal comedy show; hip-hop dance battles between teams from both countries; as well as acrobatic ballet on shoulders by award-winning Chinese dancers.

During the event, a book fair was held showcasing the second volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China (Chinese and Korean versions) as well as books on Chinese language and culture.

“Friendship, which derives from close contact between the people, holds the key to sound state-to-state relations,” said Ambassador Qiu.

He said 2019 is an important year for the two countries since it marks both the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 100th anniversary of the establishment of South Korea’s provisional government in Shanghai.
