China Media Group plans Guangzhou head office to catch up with region's development

Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor met with Shen Haixiong, president of the China Media Group, in Beijing on Saturday.

They discussed various matters, including the use of new technologies in the information age, as well as the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, which is a key focus at this year's two sessions.

The two sessions refer to the annual meetings of the country's top legislature - the National People's Congress - and the top political advisory body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Committee National Committee that began on Sunday.

The central government released the blueprint for the Bay Area two weeks ago, envisaging the region would emerge as a world first-class bay area and city cluster, based on the combined strengths of the 11-city cluster - the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and nine cities in Guangdong province.

China Media Group, which was inaugurated in April last year, is a new broadcasting platform made up of China Central Television, China National Radio and China Radio International.

Led by Shen, who's also deputy director of the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the group has taken note of the potential and strategic importance of the Bay Area, and has announced plans to establish its headquarters in the region, and a Guangdong bureau, both to be located in the provincial capital Guangzhou, as well as a news center in Shenzhen, to catch up with the region's rapid development.

In cooperation with the Guangdong provincial government, the media group also plans to use cutting-edge technologies, including 5G and offer ultra-high definition channels. Its reinforced presence in the Bay Area is significant after the group established a regional headquarter in the Yangtze River Delta, located in Shanghai, together with a Shanghai bureau, in October last year.

The Bay Area development is also high on Lam's agenda during her Beijing trip. Last Friday, she attended the second plenary meeting of the leading group for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. She will also attend the opening ceremony of the second session of the 13th National People's Congress on Tuesday.

The meeting between Lam and Shen was attended by Yan Xiao-ming, vice-president of the China Media Group, and Sun Yusheng, vice-president of China Central Television.

After the meeting, Lam was interviewed by the group's special program for the two sessions.

Lam had visited China Central Television's office in Beijing in February last year and posted photos of her posing as an anchor at a studio on her social media account during the trip.
