The prefabrication of immersed tubes for Shenzhen-Zhongshan Corridor has begun full production as the immersed tube prefabrication plant for the mega-corridor and tunnel project completed the renovation of its production line Wednesday, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

With an investment of more than 1 billion yuan (US$147.19 million), the world’s largest immersed tube prefabrication factory, which had built 33 tubes for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, undertook the task of prefabricating 22 immersed tubes for the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Corridor in June 2018.

With a length of 6.8 kilometers and a width of 46 meters, the immersed tube tunnel of the corridor project is a two-way eight-lane tunnel, which will be the longest and widest in the world upon completion. More than 320,000 metric tons of steel will be required for its construction.

“Considering the aspects of structure, work efficiency, technology and scheme, it has been difficult to meet the requirements through traditional manufacturing. It was necessary to upgrade and transform the prefabrication plant. This is also the first time that steel-shell intelligent manufacturing technology has been used for the whole process in China,” Chen Weile, director of the corridor’s management center, told the reporter from the Daily.

“During the renovation of the unloading dock, 33,000 cubic meters of rock were removed,” Chen Weibin, the project manager, was quoted as saying. A total of 4,800 cubic meters of concrete was poured to complete the unloading dock.

The renovation of the immersed tube prefabrication plant was completed in 160 days, which included the upgrade of the production line and R&D of core equipment, transforming it into an information-based intelligent factory.

According to Chen, the plant is currently able to manufacture one immersed tube per month, and 22 of the project’s 32 tubes will be prefabricated in the plant. All prefabrication work is planned to be completed by the end of 2022.

In 2019, the construction of Shenzhen-Zhongshan Corridor is expected to enter a critical stage and tackle many world-class technical problems. The first tube of the steel-shell concrete immersed tube tunnel is scheduled to have concrete poured in the first half of this year.

Meanwhile, the world’s first and only ship for immersed tube transportation and installation developed by China will conduct testing this October to prepare for the placement of the project’s first immersed tube at the end of this year.
