A measure that dispatches inspectors to housing estates to guide garbage classification at designated times each day will be promoted citywide this year, sznews.com reported yesterday, citing information released at the 30th session of the Sixth Standing Committee of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress on Monday.

The measure was adopted at selected housing estates last year that appoints one inspector in each estate to instruct residents on how to classify garbage between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day. Currently, some 800 residential estates in the city have removed garbage bins from each floor of the residential buildings, and residents dispose of classified garbage at designated points in the estates, according to the report.

The measure will be adopted in residential estates citywide this year to further promote garbage classification among residents, the report said.

Official figures show that kitchen waste accounts for more than 40 percent of household garbage in the city. Garbage classification can help increase the amount of recyclable garbage as cross-contamination among different kinds of garbage will be avoided.

The report said garbage classification will also reduce pressure on the city’s garbage incinerators due to the increase of recyclable garbage.

The city aims to achieve full garbage classification in government buildings and public venues this year, the report said.

Regulations on garbage classification have been drafted and submitted to the city government and the city’s legislature for approval, according to the report.

The government will provide more financial support for the introduction of new technologies, build a public education system and strengthen public awareness on garbage classification.

Separately, three new garbage incinerators will be built and put into use this year, increasing the capacity for garbage incineration by 10,300 tons per day.
