Construction of Shenzhen-Zhuhai link urged

Shenzhen is working on the feasibility of building a bridge over the western Pearl River Estuary to connect with Zhuhai City, which is expected to cut the travel time between the two cities to half an hour, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, more than 10 Shenzhen deputies to the Guangdong Provincial People’s Congress visited Zhongshan and Zhuhai to conduct a study on the transportation network of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

During their visits, the lawmakers urged the early start of construction on the Shenzhen-Zhuhai link.

On Tuesday afternoon, the lawmakers arrived at Ma’an Island of Zhongshan City and inspected the on-going construction of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Passage.

The 24-km link includes two artificial islands, two suspension bridges and the world’s widest immersed tunnel with eight traffic lanes in two directions, which boasts a capacity of 90,000 cars per day.

Construction on the bridges started in April, and the whole project is expected to be completed in 2023 and put into use in 2024.

According to Zhang Xian, deputy to the provincial people’s congress, the average annual growth rate of passenger and freight traffic across the Pearl River Estuary is expected to exceed 5 percent in the future, and the average daily passenger volume will exceed more than 300,000.

Zhang added that the Humen Bridge is already overburdened at present and more cross-river links are needed to connect Shenzhen with the western part of the Pearl River Delta, among which the Shenzhen-Zhuhai link is at the top of the agenda.

According to a preliminary scheme, the Shenzhen-Zhuhai link is located between the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and Shenzhen-Zhongshan Passage, which is about 20 kilometers from each of the two cross-river passageways. The link is also a combined highway and railway bridge, according to the Zhuhai Municipal Transport Bureau.

The link starts in Qianhai, Shenzhen, connects with the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway and Nanping Expressway, and crosses Lingdingyang Sea to touch land in Tangjiabei at the border of Zhuhai. The Lingdingyang Bridge will run 46.5 kilometers and the western extension will be 81.8 kilometers long.

Currently, a one-way trip between Shenzhen and Zhuhai takes drivers around two to three hours.
