Former world leaders impressed by China’s development and contribution to the world

Organized by the Australia-China Friendship and Exchange Association, the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the People’s Government of Guangdong, the 2018 Imperial Springs International Forum was held in Guangzhou from December 10th to 11th.

More than 200 former world leaders, representatives from business circles, experts and scholars attended the forum and shared their ideas on “Advancing Reform and Opening-up, Promoting win-win cooperation”.

“Only cooperation can bring multilateral benefit to the world, not unilateralism,” said Jim Harrowell, Immediate Past President of the Australia-China Business Council (NSW). “Without the help from China, Australia would not have recovered from the economic crisis.”

Danilo Turk, former President of Slovenia also indicated that the all countries in the world should work together and seek appropriate means to solve the global challenges.

Former President of the Republic of Chile Ricardo Lagos added that every country in the world is interdependent, seeing it as impossible to live alone in a globalized environment.

“A win-win result comes from coexistence in the age of globalization,” he stressed.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of China’s Reform and opening-up. Over the last 40 years, more than 700 million Chinese residents have thrown off the yoke of poverty, leaving a deep impression on the guests.

“I am really surprised by China’s development,” Mr. Harrowell said before adding. “It is a great achievement that hundreds of millions of Chinese residents have escaped poverty since China’s reform and opening-up.”

“China’s development brings benefits to people all around the world,” Hamid Karzai, former President of Afghanistan said. “Afghanistan can improve our economy, culture, education and other aspects through learning from China’s experience.”

Former President of Mozambique Joaquin Chissano stated that Africa is benefiting from China’s development. He indicated that the cooperation between Africa and China not only enhances living quality of Africans, but is also helping Africa to better integrate into the international economic system.

Founded in 2014, the Imperial Springs International Forum aims to build a platform for comprehensive exchange between China and the rest of the world through promoting mutual understanding, consensus and regional and global cooperation.

Participants of the last 4 forums conducted in-depth discussions on themes of “China-Australia Economic and Trade Relations”, “the Belt and Road Initiative for New opportunities and New Cooperation”, “Inclusive, Sustainable and Resilient Cities in the Belt and Road Initiative” and “Global Governance and China’s Perspective”.
