On November 20th, the 2018 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Cooperation Forum was held in Qingyuan, a city in the north of Guangdong Province.

Over 400 people were in attendance including Leung Chun-ying, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Chen Liangxian, Vice Governor of Guangdong, Dai Jianye, Director of the MES of the Macao Special Administrative Region, and Bernard Chan Pak-li, Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong SAR Government.

During his keynote speech Leung Chun-ying emphasized that the spectacular development in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao could not have been fulfilled without the Policy of Reform and Opening up. In future, the three sides should strive to continue the process.

Leung pointed out that by playing to their respective strengths, maximizing coordination effortS and making comprehensive plans, three places could guarantee more convenient and efficient flow of people, vehicles, logistics, capital and information within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, enabling people to enjoy a daily commute between regions in future.

Moreover, Leung indicated that the construction of the Greater Bay Area should take full advantage of the internalization of both Hong Kong and Macao, and thus improving the bay area’s international competitiveness.

Chen Liangxian said that Guangdong will continue to implement President Xi’s important speeches and focus on coordination and innovation during its participation in constructing the Greater Bay Area. The province will strive to safeguard people’s living standard, promote sci-tech innovation, protect the environment and advance the inter-connectivity of infrastructure, aiming to build a world-class bay area and city cluster with unprecedented vigor and international competitiveness.

Leung and Chen also witnessed Qingyuan’s signing of a sister cities agreement with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. At the same time, 12 projects between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao were inked during the forum.

On the theme of “Integrating the Greater Bay Area and balancing development between regions ”, this forum included representatives from industrial and commercial circles in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, famous entrepreneurs, experts and scholars.
