Guangzhou Metro first released its QR code payment option on Nov 16, 2017, becoming the first city in the country to offer the service and allowing passengers to board subways simply by scanning the QR code through WeChat, making mobile payments easier.

QR code payment hasn't been applied to all the barrier gates, which have led to long queues during peak hours. In order to solve the problem, Guangzhou Metro will remould old barrier gates and the new ones will be put into use gradually before the next Spring Festival, according to officials.
