The annual seminar of sub-national exchange and cooperation between Guangdong and its sister provinces (states) was held by Guangdong Foreign Affairs Office (FAO) in Guangzhou on November 19th.

The event attracted government officials at both provincial and municipal level and 14 representatives from 9 sister provinces including New South Wales, Nova Scotia and Bavaria, aiming to boost multilateral communication between Guangdong and its key international partners.

According to Guangdong FAO, Guangdong now has 48 sister provinces, 131 sister cities and 13 sister districts (towns), covering 63 countries around the world. Its newest sister province is Nova Scotia which signed a cooperative framework with Guangdong on November 18th.

Luo Jun, Deputy Director General of Guangdong FAO, said the province has become increasingly open so that sister relationships were formed not only between governments but also ports, hospitals and schools, making it more concrete and practical.

“We have established a number of platforms for bilateral and multilateral communication with sister provinces on a regular basis, and we have seen cooperation take off in more sectors.” he said.

New South Wales of Australia was Guangzhou’s first sister province and the partnership will see its 40th anniversary in 2019. Claire McWilliams, the Event Briefing Manager for NSW, said the Joint Economic Meeting between Guangdong and NSW is a mature cooperative mechanism that has been running since 1983.

The Premier of NSW and a delegation of 62 business representatives participated in the 26th Joint Economic Meeting held in Guangzhou, and sealed deals in such fields as medical service, Fintech and tourism.

Claire said “next year’s meeting will be a very special one. A whole program of events are under discussion and NSW would love to host a delegation from Guangdong to jointly explore opportunities.”

During the seminar, representatives from Guangdong and sister provinces shed light onto key areas of possible cooperation and had the chance to further communicate with each other.

Corinne Wyer, Director Foreign Affairs of Canton in Zurich, said it’s very important to have the possibility to meet the people in Guangdong, learn what they do and explore potential projects. “We are building an innovation park. And some leading Guangdong enterprises have already expressed interest in our project,” she said.

Apart from Guangzhou, the delegation will also visit Shenzhen, Dongguan and Foshan.
