IT unicorn firms shine at China Hi-tech Fair in Shenzhen

A Batch of IT unicorn companies valued at more than US$1 billion dazzled at the 20th China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF) at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center yesterday, presenting their state-of-the-art products and technologies to thousands of visitors from home and abroad.

Hall 1, which features the IT exhibition, “Belt & Road” area and international pavilions, is the gathering place of unicorn companies like Cambricon, SenseTime, Orbbec, iQiyi, Royole, Qiniu and DeePhi Tech.

“It is the first time that we have participated in the fair. One of the key products that we are presenting at the fair is our MLU100 intelligent processor chip,” said Bai Jin, sales manager of Cambricon’s Shanghai division.

Compared with traditional processor chips, MLU100 can achieve tremendous improvements in performance and energy efficiency when coping with artificial intelligence (AI) tasks, according to Bai.

“Currently, the chip is being utilized in Huawei’s newly launched mobile phone Mate 20,” Bai told the Shenzhen Daily. He also revealed that Cambricon had been valued at US$25 billion since the latest round of fund-raising this June.

As a world-leading AI platform company, SenseTime has brought a wide array of products to the fair, including an intelligent automobile, a functional figure beautification module and an augmented reality rendering engine platform.

“Many of our company’s technologies have been applied to cell phones manufactured by Huawei and Xiaomi. The AI beautification and facial recognition functions have also been used in OPPO’s flagship product R11s,” said Li Hongyu, a staffer with SenseTime.

SenseTime’s valuation has catapulted to US$60 billion since its D-round of financing this September, according to portal Sina Technology.

The exhibition booth of unicorn company Orbbec also attracted a large crowd yesterday.

The Shenzhen-based company’s products cover a variety of fields, including mobile phones, new retail, smart home, intelligent security, robotics and logistics.

“Our 3-D camera is definitely the most representative product at this booth. It can realize dozens of functions, such as facial recognition, gesture recognition, human skeleton recognition and 3-D measurement,” said Cai Yicheng, sales manager of Orbbec.

Cai added that compared with similar foreign products, Orbbec’s 3-D sensor is more accurate and forms clearer images, which contradicts the assumption of many customers that such products are always better when made by foreign companies than by those in China.

At present, there are more than 2,000 global companies that utilize Orbbec’s 3-D cameras to carry out different kinds of product development, said the company.

Themed “New Development Concept for High Quality Growth,” this year’s China Hi-Tech Fair will run through Sunday.
