SZers spend ¥6.4b during shopping spree

Shenzheners spent a total of 6.39 billion yuan (US$918.82 million) this year during the annual Single’s Day shopping spree that falls on Nov. 11.

The contribution ranked the city fifth in China in spending, following Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou and Guangzhou, according to a report in the Shenzhen Evening News.

Shenzhen residents spent the most on mobile phones, sportswear and household appliances, as well as shoes, dresses and milk powder. Among imports, health-care products, beauty products and diapers were some of the top picks of Shenzheners.

Sales on e-commerce giant Alibaba’s online shopping platform Tmall hit 213.5 billion yuan Sunday.

The shopping spree also stimulated the transportation business, on the road, by train and by air. Between Sunday and Nov. 20, Guangzhou Railway Group Corp. will operate 122 high-speed trains a day to transport goods sold during the e-commerce Single’s Day Golden Week. At 10:36 a.m. Sunday, G6011, the Single’s Day high-speed train loaded with parcels from Changsha, Hunan Province, arrived at Shenzhen North Railway Station.

The trains deployed for parcel transport are mainly running between Guangzhou and Shanghai and between Shenzhen and Wuhan, Zhengzhou, Xi’an, Nanchang and Guiyang. A dozen high-speed railway stations on the Guangzhou-Beijing rail, Shenzhen-Xiamen rail and Guangzhou-Guizhou rail are participating in the transport rush.
