Digital IDs accepted at hotels in Guangdong

Starting yesterday, residents with Guangdong household registration issued by the Guangdong provincial public security authority can check in at three-star or above hotels with digital ID cards generated by the mini-app known as “Yueshengshi, ” the Nanfang Daily reported.

The handy service is part of the provincial government’s agenda to improve livelihood services for residents by building a “digital government.” Guangdong launched the mini-app in May, taking the lead among all Chinese provinces.

In fact, the service had been available on a trial operation at some hotels in Zhuhai since Sept. 30 and is now available at all three-star or above hotels provincewide.

Guangdong residents with valid physical ID cards can log onto the Yueshengshi mini-app and Yueshengshi Public WeChat Account to apply for digital ones by uploading photos of their physical ID cards and undergoing facial-recognition verification.

By the end of this year, the provincial public security authority is going to implement the service at all hotels in the province, so residents will be able to check in at all approved hotels with their digital IDs.

Additionally, the digital IDs generated by the mini-app can be used to verify a user’s ID information, according to the provincial public security bureau. The bureau will be working with other relevant governmental departments to ensure the digital IDs are accepted.

The province launched the fruit of this phase of special reform, the Yueshengshi mini-app and Yueshengshi Public WeChat Account, on May 21. The two platforms enable local residents to handle all livelihood services online and much more efficiently after they complete the ID verification.

By using the WeChat mini-app, users can access a total of 142 services, including driver’s license application, birth certificate application, and services concerning social insurance and the housing provident fund.
