100 hacker gangs shut down in Guangdong

Guangdong police have closed over 100 cyber-crime cases, with more than 30 hacker groups busted and a number of case-related objects including computers and specialised hacking equipment seized in various operations, according to a press conference held by Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department on September 21st.

“After months of investigation, Guangdong police launched special operation to apprehend hacker groups in Shenzhen, Shaoguan, Zhongshan and other provinces including Hunan, Jiangxi and more,” said Guo Hongwei, Cheif Engineer of Guangdong’s Cyber Police. “Guangdong police will step up their efforts to crack down on cyber attacks, and find the source of illegal action so as to safeguard cyberspace for netizens.”

A spokesman Gave an account of how Zhongshan police closed a hacker crime case in May this year. The suspect hacked an essay checking service and gain access to the account and password of the users. The information was then used by the suspect over 100 times, earning a considerable profit.

Guangdong police remind people to set different passwords for different accounts, in case of stolen passwords being applied to other accounts and services.

According to Chinese Criminal Law, people who illegally sell or provide personal information to others, will be fined and sentenced to a maximum of three years in prison or be punished with criminal detention.
