“University of Macao (UM) will carry out the construction of joint lab with Shenzhen University by the end of this year, among other partnership programs. We will also establish a R&D partnership,” says Song Yonghua, president of University of Macao.

On the third day of the media tour to the greater bay area, reporters gained insight to Macao’s growing connections to Guangdong in education. The new lab run by both UM and Shenzhen University is one such key project.

UM previously signed a memorandum of cooperation with Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) in May to set up a joint key lab directly under the control of the Ministry of Education. The two parties are working in the field of chemical synthesis and photoelectric and energy resource.

UM also plans to work out a “super computer alliance” this year, based on SYSU’s super computer center, which is aimed toward deeper, more fruitful educational and technological partnerships.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is another field UM specialises in. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Lab for Chinese Medicine, co-founded with the Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Hong Kong Baptist University, is scheduled for inspection by the Ministry of Education next year. The three institutions are also preparing a Greater Bay Area Innovation Center for Chinese Medicine, focusing on the study and application of Chinese medicine to immune system-related diseases.

Furthermore, UM, Peking University and the Guangdong-Macao Chinese Medicine Technology Park have decided to build a Chinese Medicine Innovation Research Institute in Hengqin, Zhuhai, and a teaching and training center for Chinese and Portuguese has been established at UM to cultivate high-end bilingual experts.
